I have what I call "Asian-procrastination" and searched frantically last minute for an affordable one night stay for a mid-July, Newport wedding. Found on Wednesday: no minimum stay for two for that Friday night (read: no weekend rate b/s); 15 minutes drive to Newport; $110 plus taxes. Wow. We rush from Boston after work Friday, straight to the rehearsal dinner. Pam, our host, came from the beach five minutes away to meet us when we arrived at nine thirty that evening. Unfortunately, a miserable cold and other obligations prevented us from enjoying the beach and the town during our stay. Breakfast was lovely the following morning with coffee, juice, fresh fruit, yogurt, ham and French toast (with real maple syrup). Perfect. Conversation over breakfast brought to light that the Wickford Art Festival is the country's sixth largest and also that a Martha's Vineyard ferry is only one mile away (if I recall correctly). We found our host to be very genuine and personable. I understand Pam is an up and coming artist whose work is being displayed at a note-worthy gallery. I regret that we were so rushed and so under the weather that we didn't get to see Pam's work nor the local art scene. I guess you might say that we have some unfinished business in Wickford! This is our only B&B experience but with practical concerns and somewhat adventurous sensibilities, we really enjoyed the period Victorian surroundings that came with private bathroom and a/c, but without a television (hallelujah for me but the Mister would have liked his sports highlights). Because I fluctuated between fever, chills and sweats, I was so grateful that we decided against staying with all our friends at the nine bedroom house in Newport center. Not all the rooms had a/c so many couples bunked together for heat relief! Final note: checks or cash only, no credit cards. Clean and comfortable rooms are $110 for a double bed and $125 for a queen bed.
